Introduction
I am Diego Montoya and this is my final report for the WordPress Credits program. During this week, I contributed to the Polyglots team by working on the translation of as many strings as I could. This report summarizes what I worked on, what I learned and how the experience shaped me as a contributor.
Teams and Projects I Contributed to
I contributed to the Polyglots team. My main objective was translating the strings my mentor asked me into the Spanish from Costa Rica. I did as many as I could, although she told me to only do 100 strings. I also joined the Slack channels of WordPress, WordPress Mexico, Polyglots, Polyglots in Spanish, and Polyglots Costa Rica, as well as creating my account in Gravatar.
Learning Resources
I started with the videos included in most of the lessons while reading their contents. I also read the Polyglots Handbook, included in the second lesson of Project in WordPress Credits program. My mentor, Rita Robles Loaiza, provided me the access to WordPress.com to create my website, the glossary and rules of the team and a link with strings of WordPress to translate them.
Challenges and Solutions
I could say that I did not really have had a lot of problems during the program. Maybe the only ones are the time management, which was difficult at first but then I organized better, and connection issues, which are not mayor problems as I can wait power to come back. Some of the little challenges could have been that some words in English were confusing or unknown for me, so I often had to use a translator. Most of them were solved over time.
My Contributions
I mainly contributed to the translation of 259 strings for WordPress.
Key Learnings
With WordPress Credits program I discovered many things I did not know. For example, I realized that websites are not created with some kind of “Google Power Point”, but with hosting services. I also learned that problems in this community are solved in a pacific way and need the collaboration of everyone. For last, I discovered that WordPress was not a company of news, somehow, but a website maker.
Skills Gained
Finally, I gained a few skills with the program, like:
- Soft skills: time management between education, website building and entertainment.
- Technical: knowledge of website creation.
- Creative: (basic) design building, color selection and contrast, and information organization.
Personal Reflections and Next Steps
I was surprised about how collaboraive, respectful and charmful is the WordPress community. I did not found almost any unrespectful message in the different channels of WP in Slack. However, I am afraid that I may not continue contributing to the program as I will not have the time or need to continue contributing because this was just my project of community service. Although, I may contribute from time to time.
